Our skin is the the largest organ in the body, which is why there are many different issues that can arise. Some include Acne, Dermatitis, Psoriasis/Eczema, Rosacea, patchy discolouration, focalized hair loss, fungal or bacterial infections. We have many natural treatments to address these conditions.

Here is our clinic director, Dr. Anthony Gucciardi, ND, discussing some of his clinical experiencing with skin conditions.

The skin is an organ that is tied to many different systems.

Issues in our gastrointestinal tract can lead to different skin conditions. An unhealthy microbiome, a leaky gut, or a diet that is full of inflammatory foods can worsen many different skin conditions. Chronic constipation can increase the toxic load on the body, resulting in a worsening of skin conditions. Chronic diarrhea is a sign that there is probably a lot of heat in the gastric system. Heat in the system can lead to stronger types of acne.

If your liver and kidneys are not filtering your body properly, toxins will spill over into your blood and start circulating through the body, causing rashes and dermatoses. This can also exacerbate autoimmune conditions such as eczema or psoriasis.

Our immune system can also heavily influence the health of our skin. Autoimmune conditions such as psoriasis and eczema can be worsened with stress and anxiety, and with certain chemical triggers in the environment. At the end of the day, your environment plays a large role in the antibodies we produce in our system. You may be reacting to specific foods, certain varnishes or materials in the home, cleaning products or laundry detergents, different species of mould, specific pollen, or even an entire families of a plant specie. It can be difficult to figure out where the allergies are coming from sometimes, we but we do have in depth antibody testing at our clinic that allows us to investigate what your immune system may be reacting to.

Hormones can also play a large role in skin conditions, specifically acne. Fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone throughout the menstrual cycle can cause different degrees of acne for different people. In depth hormone testing, along with natural treatments to balance hormones, is another approach when it comes to some skin conditions.

As you can see, there is a lot to consider. In the western model of medicine, the most popular tools are cortisone creams, or anti-histamines such as Claritin or Benadryl. The western medical toolbox does not go very deep, which is why Naturopathic and alternative medicine is a very good option for skin health. By investigating the different systems above, addressing concerns with natural remedies, and educating our patients around their dietary and lifestyle choices, we can achieve long lasting relief from the skin condition you may be dealing with.
